PostSubject: Babies Go RAW!!!   Mon Jun 29, 2009 8:18 pm

Babies will NOT stay in any longer, and escaped big style this morning, no matter what I did they still managed to scale the various obstacles I put in their way.
At lunchtime I gave Lona a large bone and a banana, whilst Cariad had a couple of chicken carcasses and 2 smaller ones.
I looked out later and saw this

They are only just 3 weeks old, I was expecting Cariad to start regurgitating for them sometime in the next week, but they seem to have skipped several 'stages' and just gone straight onto raw Shocked
Neither Cariad nor Lona will let them eat chicken carcass though, they are told off pretty smartly if they go near one. Tonight I gave Cariad a piece of ox heart for 2 along with 2 chicken carcasses and they were allowed to nibble at the ox heart but again told off for going near the carcass. Fascinating stuff eh??

I think it may be the start of the process of them teaching the pups how to defend their food and know their position regarding rank, from reading Shaun Ellis book 'wolf talk' wolves do this with a piece of fur or tail from an animal.

Out of interest with the Barf diet, does the freezing process kill all the bacteria and worms in the food?

All the raw I feed is 'human grade' anyway so I doubt if there are worms or bacteria in the food, but I always freeze everything as soon as it comes in the house. The pet mince is from my butcher and is frozen, as is the heart, so a simple matter of putting it in the car, taking it home and straight into the freezer within 15 minutes of purchase. Landywoods food comes in a refrigerated van, so again straight in the freezer once I separated it into smaller quantities. I buy chicken carcasses as well, and they come home frozen, and I leave them until I can separate them, they go into bags of 10 each and I decant them as needed and keep them in the fridge until eaten over a period of say 2 or 3 days. It is interesting to note that not ALL the puppies are involved in this at present, there are a couple that haven't bothered yet. I shall be observing though!!

Ty June for that....

Human grade food does have worms and bacteria in it as well as other stuff they inject it with to look good on the shelves...for example some people get worms if they have a very raw steak as the cooking process isn't given a chance to kill the worms, plus we know people get ecoli and sallmanalla from handling raw chicken.

Thats why I was interested to know if the freezing process kills the worms and bacteria.

I subscribe to the Britbarf site which is extremely informative about all things raw, you can find them on yahoo groups. Derek, who runs the site, is a mine of information as regards all these types of questions, which are regularly asked by newcomes to this style of feeding. Your questions re worms and salmonella are something which is a great worry to many people when commencing raw feeding, and I can only direct you to the site, where you can ask the question and be given definitive and informative answers. I have nowhere near the in depth experience that he and the many contributors to the site have.
