COE means co-efficiency. This is the percentage of inbreeding present in a puppy. Do you remember the Pedigree Dogs programme on BBC where they showed the effects of constantly in-breeding and excessive line breeding in dogs and all the health problems that resulted?? In some cases the COE in those dogs was 45% giving no genetic variation at all.
The recommended in-breeding percentage is given as 7% - the Swedish Kennel Club now recommends 6% - so all my matings have been done with this in mind. The matings with Storm were just over 3%, this mating with JJ is 1.2% therefore my puppies will have good genetic diversity, something we in the Utonagan breed struggle with as there is such a small gene pool and in the past what has happened is that the combinations used have created health problems as sometimes you can find the same dogs in the pedigree in 3 generations. This in turn can lead to a dog that is carrying say a recessive gene being trebled or quadrupled up, the recessive gene isn't recessive anymore and voila a health problem you thought was in the background and meant to stay there suddenly becomes active again.
That is the reason why Janine and I bought Cruz and Midnight between us, they come from KC registered lines where the health is traceable, so they can be used to help diversify the Utonagan's genetic make up so as to lessen the chances of this happening.
