    Lake District Empty Lake District

Post by Guest Mon Jul 05, 2010 3:56 am

We've just come back from a holiday in the Lakes. The cottage we rented was near Bassenthwaite Lake and had fabulous views over Skiddaw.
My favourite walk was from Elterwater, down the Cumbrian Way to Skelwith Bridge where we had lunch. The dogs were allowed inside while we ate so we managed to get out of the sun for a bit.

This is us by Skelwith Bridge with my sister and her dog Bob.
After lunch we continued along the Cumbrian Way to Colwith Force then took the road back to Elterwater. Didn't like road walking but were on a dealine to get back to the carpark before our tickets ran out. Half-way down the road we were able to leave it and walk the rest of the way through the woods.

The dogs loved their holiday and it was so nice to find so many dog friendly pubs and shops!

The Langdales were my favourite area.

Here we are having a picnic at Blea Tarn with the Langdales in the distance. Heavenly.

Looks beautiful and you certainly picked the right time, usually there is rain in the Lakes at least a couple of days. Sounds like you had a wonderful time with the dogs as well.

We took Hal to Cumbria just before he died, and Elterwater was our fave place !! Just beware though you haven't picked up any ticks. Hal acquired about 14 of the little blighters from Elterwater. I'll post up the pictures we took of him in the woods you mention - they were great weren't they. He died shortly after this holiday, so Elterwater holds a very special place in my heart !

We are really lucky to live just half an hour's drive from the Lakes so go there most weekends if it's fine. We can't walk too far with Raiden as he is still so young but the kids are only little and can't walk far either so it works out quite well.

A group of us walked up Cat Bells last year and my friend brought her Beagle who loved it, so that's my aim for Raiden when he gets a bit older.

Yeah I know. It's going to be entertaining :-) We are going to start going camping again this summer now the little ones are a bit older, the kids are looking forward to it so hopefully Raiden will take it all in his stride. There's some great campsites in the Lakes that you don't need to book, so it will just be a case of throwing everything and everyone into the car one sunny Saturday morning and going for it!!

I camp at Shows and the girls love it,you would think they had always done it, Blaidd camped with us at MK, and apart from digging the groundsheet up and shredding it he was very good. The girlies have crates with vetbed in and are on long lines and are quite happy.

Both Kimba and Bob had two ticks each. We found mouthwash excellent for dislodging them. It was the only alcohol we had with us when we found the blighters LOL.

I think Max was too silky for them to get a hold on his fur as he didn't get any. They all enjoyed the extra "attention" they got when we searched for ticks every night!

Is Vetbed indestructable then? Maska does not spend much time in his crate but when he does he always chews up his bedding. Have not found anything that survives him so far....

Mine have never every bothered with vetbed come to think of it!!!! Even Blaidd who, like all babies, has a go at everything he can find (ie the some of tent groundsheet was dragged outside and shredded-I kept feeling myself being gently tugged along, and I sighed to myself and turned over)my fault in a way because I never bothered to tie it all down and stuff, it was a hot day and I just told Wayne to put the tent up, not bother with the sleeping pods and just put a groundsheet inside and then I put my airbed down with a sleeping bag on top.
Kirstie was telling me that she still has the piece of vetbed she took home with her when she collected Maska, so yes it may well be indistructable!!!!! Although I am sure someone will come along with a tale saying it isn't!!!!
I got mine in a massive roll from ebay, I still have a fair bit and cut it off as needs be

I had a thought whilst walking round the fields this morning with the dogs. Isn't "Elterwater" "Entwater"? Or something like that. I may be wrong, but Elterwater doesn't sit true with me!

Elterwater is near Ambleside. Sorry, never heard of Entwater, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. I haven't heard of loads of places which is quite embarassing considering how close I live, lol.
